Mastering Part 11 – Renovations in the OBC

Renovating existing buildings is a challenging and often misunderstood part of Ontario Building Code design and enforcement. While Part 11 was developed to offer a flexible and streamlined compliance path, it is frequently applied inconsistently—and in many cases, not fully understood. As a result, building departments and designers are often left navigating unclear expectations, inconsistent interpretations, and renovation projects that don’t fit neatly into a single category.

This one-day, in-depth workshop is designed for building inspectors, plans examiners, and designers of all experience levels who work with existing buildings. Participants will learn how to apply the Part 11 compliance path with clarity and confidence, classifying buildings appropriately, evaluating performance levels, and determining when compensating construction or compliance alternatives are necessary.

The course doesn’t avoid the hard conversations. Together, we’ll explore how to approach projects with multiple major occupancies, renovations that include different levels of work and new construction components, and situations where upgrading existing construction results in more stringent requirements than new construction. We’ll also take an in-depth look at compliance alternatives, including how to apply them effectively.

Through discussion, real-world examples, and practical guidance, this course will demystify Part 11 and help participants make sound, defensible decisions in the face of complex renovation challenges.
