Part 9 Passive Fire Protection

Passive fire protection is a critical component of life safety and building performance, particularly in small residential and commercial buildings. This one-day workshop is designed to help Part 9 building officials, designers, and builders understand and apply the requirements for passive fire protection in small buildings.
Participants will explore fire separations, fire resistance ratings, smoke-tight barriers, and firestopping systems through real-life examples and code references. The course features interactive activities and games to reinforce key learning outcomes and will include analysis exercises to assess conformance with code requirements.
The 2024 Ontario Building Code introduces important updates to many of these requirements, including enhanced fire separation standards for houses with secondary suites, modifies firestopping requirements, and the expanded need for listed systems at joints adjacent to fire-rated assemblies.
